Make your own apron at home
by Josh Stone
Nobody else needs a good apron more than a lady who works in hotel or restaurant as a waitress. For whole day waitress has to swing to and fro between kitchen and table. Lots of dishes in small tray at same time, picking it from kitchen, making way between tightly placed tables and serving to unmannerly customers, result in many unwanted stains. It does not matter how consciously you move around or serve to customers, you are bound to get stains. There is famous joke on this “at the end of each day, each waiter counts number of tips and number of stains he got over a period of whole day”
. So, without any confusion we can say first priority of any waitress is to choose good apron and it isn’t that difficult either. You just have to look around; chances are you will get aprons in your own hotel and restaurant. Mostly hotels and restaurants tie up with another apron company to provide their employees good quality apron at cheap rates. Some hotels even got their own “uniform department”, these are exclusively for hotel employees and aprons or uniforms available there are mostly of good qualities and available at all the sizes. If we look at online stores a good quality 45*35 inch size black apron made of material like cotton /rubber costs anywhere between $9 to $14 depending upon the brand and different cotton/rubber qualities company is using. These aprons perfectly serve the purpose and resist the attack of various chemicals, acids and caustics.
But purchasing it from restaurant itself or “tie up company” isn’t necessary. They do not care from where you get them. They are hotel owners their job is to run hotel and earn profit from it, not earning from selling clothes to hotel staff. What they really demand is their members in proper dresses, which follow hotel laws and serve the basic purposes. Believe it or not properly dressed cook chef or waitress is big necessity for any hotel to function smoothly. But this doesn’t mean you have to purchase apron from outside. There is one more option in your hand. You can make your apron at home. I know what you will start thinking, “Apron at home, sounds tricky, not my kind of job” I know you will be crowded with all sorts of pessimistic ideas. But in the coming paragraphs ill teach you in simple steps how to make your own apron at home, so that you would make it yourself and trust me it isn’t difficult either. You don’t even need simple sewing machine to complete it.
So, first step is to notice the material of apron. You can check out your colleague’s apron. This will give you clear idea of what it made of, but as I previously mentioned most aprons are made of rubber/ cotton and in most food related hotels, black is usual color for aprons.
After choosing a fabric, cut 3 pieces, dimensions should be 25”*14.5” wide, 22”*10”, 60”*2” wide. Next thing you have to do is to hem all four sides of both larger rectangles, its better to fold over half inch then another half again. Stitch by using simple sewing machine, but if you haven’t got one, there are many branded glues available that can be used to glue fabrics together. The smaller of 2 rectangles should be positioned above larger one. Close to hem stitches at bottom of larger piece. You can stitch around bottom and sides of smaller piece but leave the top open. This will serve the purpose of pocket.
Next step is to section off apron by stitching fro-open edge of pocket down to hemmed edge of pocket. Do this for atleast3 times, to make 3 different sections of pocket for various purposes. Their width should be roughly around 2”, 10” and 10”. They can serve different purposes like holding tips, order books etc.
Long edges of the strip of fabric should be folded under half inch each .Now, fold entire strip in half-length ways and mark center of aprons as well as of strip. Align the marks placing one half of the folded strip on the front side of waistband. Edge of apron waist should be up against the fold of strip. Stitch, continuing off the apron and onto the tie. Do it other half in same manner
This will finish your homemade apron. I know if you follow it wisely, there would not be any problem. Only thing to care about is what glue you are using, you have to choose them carefully. Because if you do not use good branded glue, chances are it will come out after first wash. So, while choosing glue, it’s better to consult someone who is already using it. But I am sure if you try it wholeheartedly, you will be successful in your very first attempt besides saving some money, it will also give you lots of satisfaction. But for some reason if still you don’t want to make your apron at home, then I’ll personally suggest you to buy from online wholesalers, they will charge 10 to 30% lower than market rate without compromising on quality of apparel. We mostly have misconception that wholesalers only sell in bulk quantities and they do not care about individual buyers. But reality is in fact something else; truth is those days are gone when wholesalers only sell their items to big retailers. This is Internet age; nothing ever affected social and economical structure this way. When questioned about this changing trend among wholesalers Mr. Barringer sales director of famous www.bestbuyuniform.com answered
“Thousands and thousands visit our site to purchase uniforms and aprons, when there is such a high demand, no wholesaler can ignore such a huge market created by online buyers”

A Look at Personalized Aprons by Thomas Morva
When we look at the historical picture of aprons throughout time, we know that they originated from a functional need to keep clothing clean and to be able to carry utensils and kindling wood. Over time, however, aprons have evolved into somewhat of a fashion accessory with people enjoying personalized aprons.
Personalized aprons can come in many forms. Since these are customizable, the customer can tell the manufacturer or seamstress exactly what they would like to see. Some people like aprons that don a saying such as "Karen's Kitchen", or a simple, yet catchy phrase that defines their cooking persona.
The embroidery of aprons is also very popular. This form of personalizing aprons is usually a little more expensive than the simpler screen-printing but offers an heirloom of sorts. People who are serious about their cooking enjoy embroidered aprons as gifts for all occasions.
Companies that offer personalized aprons often have a huge selection of styles, colors and sizes to choose from. In addition to adding a name or cute catch phrase, these companies often have a selection of artwork to further personalize the apron. If you are a cat or dog lover or have some other enthusiasm or hobby, you can be assured that a pattern is available to fit your personality. Online specialty shops are perhaps the best place to shop for personalized aprons. Many companies offer personalized aprons for as little as $10 each. For this reason, personalized aprons make great gifts.
Aprons have certainly evolved over the years. Although they have been used for thousands of years for a variety of purposes, modern aprons are usually fun, colorful and portray a personal message from the wearer. Personalized and embroidered aprons are wonderful gifts for loved ones who enjoy a little spice in their cooking attire.

The Applications of Lead Aprons by Thomas Morva
Lead aprons are commonly used in medical and dental practices. In dental practices, the lead apron is often used when having a panoramic dental X-ray performed. Since a panoramic x-ray emits radiation to all parts of the upper body, a lead apron is required to keep the patient safe and to prevent as much excess radiation as possible.
Lead aprons, or another relevant type of shield, should always be used when x-rays are performed. Keep in mind that the part of your body being x-rayed must remain uncovered. The lead apron helps to shield unaffected parts of the body from contamination from radiation. These lead aprons are especially important in protecting vital organs, namely reproductive organs and the breasts of women.
An interesting fact about lead aprons is that they contain radiation. Since lead aprons are exposed to a countless number of x-ray hours, most states and counties require that they be discarded and handled as hazardous material. Classifying lead aprons as a hazardous material means that your local authorities require you to dispose of the lead apron in an authorized and approved hazardous materials location.
Lead aprons of today are much safer and lightweight that those in years past. Many of the lead aprons used today have Velcro straps to make it easier to secure the apron in place. We understand more about safe and unsafe levels of radiation and this knowledge has helped manufacturers in creating safe and effective lead aprons for both medical and dental use. If you have ever had an x-ray, chances are you were instructed to wear the apron.

The History of Aprons by Thomas Morva
Aprons have been cooks' companions for hundreds of years. Indeed, aprons were used by men and women for a variety of tasks long before they were seen on 1950s television. During this era, women were portrayed as homemakers and good mothers and you rarely saw them without their aprons.
Some researchers point to Biblical references about aprons. They cite a passage in which Adam and Eve sewed together fig leaves to make aprons to cover themselves. We traditionally think of aprons being used for cooking, and while that is true, they have served as a cover-up for other tasks that tend to be messy. Occupations such as butchers, welders and bakers have always used aprons to protect both their clothing and bodies from their work.
For centuries, homemakers have used aprons. Even since the early 19th century, women have used aprons to keep their clothing clean. They have also used aprons to carry essential utensils such as rolling pins, for gathering and carrying eggs and for transporting kindling wood. Aprons have been an effective tool for many, many years.
It was not until the 1940s and 1950s that society started to see the stereotypes of the ""perfect mother"" who always wore an apron, no matter what. Until that time, aprons were thought of as a functional piece of the wardrobe.
Today's aprons are more stylish. Perhaps surprisingly, aprons have made a fashionable comeback, even making occasional runway appearances in the form of the apron dress.

An apron is an outer protective garment that covers primarily the front of the body. It may be worn for hygienic reasons as well as in order to protect clothes from wear and tear. The apron is commonly part of the uniform of several work categories, including waitresses, nurses, homemakers and domestic staff. It is also worn as a decorative garment by women. There are many different apron styles depending on the purpose of the apron. Aprons are also worn in many supermarket establishments such as Morrisons and Waitrose to protect workers clothes from damage, mainly bib aprons.
In addition to cloth, aprons can be made from a variety of materials. Rubber aprons are commonly used by persons working with dangerous chemicals, and lead aprons are commonly worn by persons such as X-ray technicians who work near radiation. Aprons, such as those used by carpenters, may have many pockets to hold tools.Waterproof household aprons, made of oilcloth or PVC are suitable for cooking and washing dishes. The term is also used more generally to refer to an expanse surrounding some object; for example, an airport can have a concrete "apron" around it, where planes and other vehicles can move about. The rubberized air cushion of a hovercraft is also called an apron.
The word apron is from the corruption of the term "a napron" into "an apron". The original spelling of napron is lost.
Styles
Depending on the purpose of an apron, it can be designed in many different ways. A basic distinction is between waist aprons which cover the body from the waist down and a bib apron which also covers the upper part of the body.
An apron is usually held in place by two ribbon-like strips of cloth that are tied in the back. A bib apron may either have a strap in around the neck (perhaps the most widespread use today), or shoulder straps that criss-cross in the back and attach to the waistband. The advantage of the former design is that it makes it especially simple to put on the bib apron. The advantage of the shoulder strap design is that it makes the apron more comfortable to wear; a neck strap can slightly impair ease of movement.
Other types of aprons include the pinafore and the cobbler apron. There are also aprons that will cover the sleeves.
Some modern day aprons will often have humorous expressions or designs. Some modern day aprons have will often have corporate logos.
Apron Stereotypes
Up until the mid 1960s, the apron was seen as an integral part of the attire of many employees and housewives. Cheaper clothes and washing machines made aprons less common. Feminists stress that aprons are equally appropriate for both women and men. However, prevailing social norms ensure that women frequently wear more expensive clothing, and may therefore be more likely to want the protection an apron offers.
Today, the apron has enjoyed a minor renaissance in terms of both women and men now wearing them when performing household chores. However, it still is not as prevalent as it was prior to the 1960s. |
Choose the Best Apron For Superior Protection and Style by Ray La Foy
Few people can maneuver a kitchen without getting a little dirty. Whether they're pro chefs or beginning bakers doesn't matter, it seems cooking well and getting a bit messy go hand in hand. With this in mind, aprons are a mainstay of the smart cook - pro or not.
Apron patterns are available in a number of styles from very simplistic designs to very complex patterns that involve a number of advanced cuts and seams. The choice is really up to the maker, but remember, whatever is produced should be durable so the cook who receives it can enjoy it for years to come.
Apron styles are more in number than many might think, too. They can include:
* Basic around the waist aprons. These are good for protecting the pants from spills and splatters, but not blouses or shirts. These wouldn't be advisable for those who work with a lot of sauces that can splatter or those seriously into barbecuing, but they are more than fine for basic flour baking and so on.
* Barbecue aprons. Designed for both men and women, these are pretty simple aprons that offer both top and bottom coverage. These can come with pockets for holding implements such as brushes or sauce bottles. They tend to slide over the head and tie in the back and generally are made in colors that lend themselves to barbecuing.
* Women's full body aprons. These come in a number of different styles that include those with pockets and without; with lace and without; with crosshatch ties and without; tailored centers to show off a waistline and more. These aprons run the gamut of styles and even come in vintage patterns.
When choosing material for aprons, keep in mind the following things:
* Aprons are meant to absorb spills in the kitchen so more expensive clothing does not. With this in mind, materials should be sturdy and capable of handling a spill or two and lots of washing without being destroyed.
* Colors. Barbecue aprons should almost never be white, but pure white is just fine for baking pastries and other such goodies.
* Patterns. Checks and solids are great for barbecue chefs of both sexes. Men likely won't swoon over a calico or flower print though. Know who you're making the pattern for and choose the materials accordingly.
Basic apron projects are great for beginning sewers to dive into. Whether hand stitched or a machine is used, the simplicity of some of the patterns really lend themselves to teaching a beginner the basics of everything from working with a pattern, to cutting clothing and handling stitching. Remember though that some patterns for aprons can be pretty complex, so for those just starting out, stick with a simple apron that involves only a few cuts and perhaps only a few lines of stitching.
Aprons are very handy articles of clothing that can save "good clothes" from the beating a kitchen can dish out. Whether for barbecuing, baking or more, aprons are great additions to any cook's wardrobe. They also serve as great projects for beginning sewers or even the more advanced ones to practice their skills while netting a useful item in the process.
