Hospitality Career

Hotels and other accommodations are as diverse as the many family and business travelers they accommodate. The industry includes all types of lodging, from upscale hotels to RV parks. Motels, resorts, casino hotels, bed-and-breakfast inns, and boarding houses also are included. In fact, in 2004 nearly 62,000 establishments provided overnight accommodations to suit many different needs and budgets.

Establishments vary greatly in size and in the services they provide. Hotels and motels comprise the majority of establishments and tend to provide more services than other lodging places. There are five basic types of hotels - commercial, resort, residential, extended-stay, and casino. Larger properties offer a variety of services for their guests, including a range of restaurant and beverage service options - from coffee bars and lunch counters to cocktail lounges and formal fine-dining restaurants. Some properties provide a variety of retail shops on the premises, such as gift boutiques, newsstands, drug and cosmetics counters, and barber and beauty shops. An increasing number of full-service hotels now offer guests access to laundry and valet services, swimming pools, and fitness centers or health spas.

Conventions and business meetings are major sources of revenue for hotels and motels that are specialized (commercial hotels) and have banquet rooms, exhibit halls, and spacious ballrooms to accommodate conventions, business meetings and wedding receptions.

Conference hotels are fully self-contained entities specifically designed for meetings. They provide physical fitness and recreational facilities for meeting attendees, in addition to state-of-the-art audiovisual and technical equipment, a business center, and banquet services.

Resort hotels and motels offer luxurious surroundings with a variety of recreational facilities, such as swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts, game rooms, and health spas, as well as planned social activities and entertainment. Resorts typically are located in vacation destinations or near natural settings, such as mountains, the seashore, theme parks, or other attractions. As a result, the business of many resorts fluctuates with the season. Some resort hotels and motels provide additional convention and conference facilities to encourage customers to combine business with pleasure. During the off season, many of these establishments solicit conventions, sales meetings, and incentive tours to fill their otherwise empty rooms; some resorts even close for the off-season.

Residential hotels provide living quarters for permanent and semi permanent residents. They combine the comfort of apartment living with the convenience of hotel services. Many have dining rooms and restaurants that also are open to residents and to the general public.

Extended-stay hotels combine features of a resort and a residential hotel. Typically, guests use these hotels for a minimum of 5 consecutive nights. These facilities usually provide rooms with fully equipped kitchens, entertainment systems, ironing boards and irons, office space with computer and telephone lines, fitness centers, and other amenities.

Casino hotels provide lodging in hotel facilities with a casino on the premises. The casino provides table wagering games and may include other gambling activities, such as slot machines and sports betting. Casino hotels generally offer a full range of services and amenities.

In addition to hotels and motels, bed-and-breakfast inns, recreational vehicle (RV) parks, campgrounds, and rooming and boarding houses provide lodging for overnight guests.

Bed-and-breakfast inns provide short-term lodging in private homes or small buildings converted for this purpose and are characterized by highly personalized service and inclusion of breakfast in the room rate. Their appeal is quaintness, with unusual service and decor.

RV parks and campgrounds cater to people who enjoy recreational camping at moderate prices. Some parks and campgrounds provide service stations, general stores, shower and toilet facilities, and coin-operated laundries. While some are designed for overnight travelers only, others are for vacationers who stay longer. Some camps provide accommodations, such as cabins and fixed campsites, and other amenities, such as food services, recreational facilities and equipment, and organized recreational activities. Examples of these overnight camps include children’s camps, family vacation camps, hunting and fishing camps, and outdoor adventure retreats that offer trail riding, white-water rafting, hiking, fishing, game hunting, and similar activities.

Other short-term lodging facilities in this industry include guesthouses, or small cottages located on the same property as a main residence, and youth hostels - dormitory-style hotels with few frills, occupied mainly by students traveling on limited budgets. Also included are rooming and boarding houses, such as fraternity houses, sorority houses, off-campus dormitories, and workers’ camps. These establishments provide temporary or longer term accommodations that may serve as a principal residence for the period of occupancy. These establishments also may provide services such as housekeeping, meals, and laundry services.

Increased competition among establishments in this industry has spurred many independently owned and operated hotels and other lodging places to join national or international reservation systems, which allow travelers to make multiple reservations for lodging, airlines, and car rentals with one telephone call. Nearly all hotel chains operate online reservation systems through the Internet.

Hotel operations are becoming diverse and complex, but all positions require employees to maintain a customer-service orientation. Hoteliers recognize the importance of personal service and attention to guests; so they look for persons with positive personality traits and good communication skills when filling many guest services positions, such as desk clerk and host and hostess positions. Many hotel managers place a greater emphasis on customer service skills while providing specialized training in important skill areas, such as computer technology and software.

Although the skills and experience needed by workers in this industry depend on the specific occupation, most entry-level jobs require little or no previous training. Basic tasks usually can be learned in a short time. Almost all workers in the hotel and other accommodations industry undergo on-the-job training, which usually is provided under the supervision of an experienced employee or manager. Some large chain operations have formal training sessions for new employees.

Many hotels fill first-level manager positions by promoting administrative support and service workers - particularly those with good communication skills, a solid educational background, tact and loyalty. People with these qualities still advance to manager jobs but, more recently, lodging chains have primarily been hiring persons with four-year college degrees in the liberal arts or other fields and starting them in trainee or junior management positions.

Travel Indiana's Road to Freedom

The Historic National Highway (40), in Indiana was little more than cow pastures weary families traveled in hundreds of wagons. While these families made the treacherous trek in hopes of finding a better future in the West during the Gold Rush another set of travelers headed north on Highway 27. Exhausted slaves sought refuge in Newport, Indiana at the home of Levi and Catharine Coffin located at 113 U.S. 27 North in Fountain City, Indiana.

Levi Coffin & The Underground Railroad

Built in 1839, the Coffin's eight-room, Federal style brick home is a National Historic Landmark that remains standing in what is now Fountain City. In the damp, cool basement is a working well, still filled with fresh water the Coffin's used. Upstairs, hidden behind the beds is a hidden cubby hole stretching into the darkness along the back of the house. Unable to move, and barely able to breath, the runaway slaves hid in the cramped quarters for however long it took when the slave hunters came to call on the Coffin's.

As supporters of the Underground Railroad, Levi and Catherine also helped a girl named "Eliza," whose story is told in Uncle Tom's Cabin. Out back visitors can view the secret compartment in the back of a wagon where slaves hid. The sacrifices the Coffin's made helped more than 2,000 slaves reach safety during the 20 years they lived in Newport. They continued their efforts in after moving in 1847 to Cincinnati where Levi operated a wholesale warehouse which supplied goods to free labor stores. Group Tours can be arranged by Appt. Leave a voice message at The Levi Coffin Museum Office at (765) 847 -2432.

Hoosier Hospitality Welcomes Travelers At The Huddleston Farmhouse in Cambridge City, IN

The Huddleston Farmhouse in Cambridge City is the scene of historic Civil War re-enactments. The thrill of visiting the Civil War Living History Encampment is the battle of the War Between the States. Smoke fills the air from the authentic cannons as the battle escalates between the Union and Confederate infantry, artillery, and cavalry units. When the war is over guests join the soldiers to share a campfire-cooked meal of beef stew, cornbread, and cobbler. Our friends, local historians, Jim & Sandra Resh joined us on a tour of the completely restored three-story house owned by John and Susannah Huddleston. The authentic furnishings and the volunteers help create a true feeling of being back on the farm in the old days. The 78-acre farm includes a barn, smokehouse and springhouse. John and Susannah had plenty of help around the farm with 11 children. Many travelers stopped at the Inn for rest and supplies during their trek along the National Historic Highway.

Dining With President Lincoln

In the candle-lit dining room guests can join President Lincoln in the Huddleston Farmhouse's for the popular Harvest Supper. The savory aroma of fresh and hearty recipes from the nineteenth century drift in from the kitchen where women cook over an open flame. Everyone listens with interest as Lincoln describes his life before retreating to give a speech in the barn. The Hearth Dinners, guided tours, special historical exhibits, and workshops for adults and children are available throughout the year at the Huddleston Farmhouse.

A special word of thanks goes out to Jim Orr, Director of Huddleston Farmhouse Inn Museum, and the extraordinary volunteers who make a trip through time at the Huddleston Farmhouse a memorable one. For information on the hearty Hearth Dinners and other activities available at the Huddleston Farmhouse Museum call 765-478-3172. The Huddleston Farmhouse is located at 838 National Road West in Cambridge City, Indiana.

North Floridian Hospitality   by Caroline Brame

Interested in taking a trip to Florida? Consider North Florida for the next vacation destination. Although most of Florida's most famous attractions are in the south, the northern part of the state, extending from Pensacola to Jacksonville, offers travelers plenty of what they expect from Florida with a twist of Southern Charm.

The area surrounding the bustling metropolis and unofficial capital of South Georgia of Jacksonville is full of fun activities and sights for the whole family. Amelia Island, home to the Ritz Carlton and the Bausch & Lomb ATP tournament, is a resort community set within beautiful natural beauty. Between hundred year-old live oaks, the marshes of the Intracoastal Waterway, and the Atlantic Ocean is a nature-lovers paradise, a tennis players dream, and the perfect place to get pampered. Travel south to Ponte Vedra Beach, home of the Tournament Players Championship at Sawgrass. Golf lovers will find a plethora of the most prestigious and world-renowned golf courses while the family will enjoy its beautiful beaches and tranquil lifestyle. Following the coastline will take visitors to St. Augustine, the nations oldest city, and home to great shopping and beaches. Take a stroll down St. George Street for old city charm and shopping and stop for a bite to eat at Opus 39, 95 Cordova St, Fiddlers Green, or Saltwater Cowboys, all St. Augustine favorites. Jacksonville itself is home to great attractions, including Alltel Stadium, home to the Jacksonville Jaguars professional football team, the Florida Theatre where you can see concerts, plays, and shows year round, and the beautiful St. John's River.

Traveling west on 1-70 takes you through Florida's plantation region and Tallahassee, the state capital. This is not the home of palm trees and famous beaches, but antique live oaks, sprawling plantation homes, and freshwater springs. With beaches within a 30-minute drive and plenty of lakes, there are plenty of areas to play and with two state universities in town there is plenty of arts and cultural events to enjoy. This area of Florida is so different from the rest, yet many visitors to the state are not aware of all that the area has to offer. Preservation of the past and respect for its natural beauty is what keeps the Tallahassee area ready for more generations to enjoy.

The Florida Panhandle is situated between the southern borders of Georgia and Alabama and the Gulf of Mexico, making it culturally and historically more similar to the Deep South than the rest of the state. The Gulf Coast beaches, known as the Redneck Riviera, are renowned for white sand beaches and warm waters. The emerald color water extends from Pensacola Bay to Panama City, including beaches such as Gulf Breeze, Fort Walton Beach, Destin, Seaside, Perdido Key, Navarre, Sandestin, Grayton Beach, Santa Rosa Beach, and Seagrove. Deep-sea fishing is the activity of choice with Destin known as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village"; of course, eating the catch of the day may be more popular. There are seafood and oyster houses on every corner catering to families, couples, or large parties. Seaside, made famous by the movie "The Truman Show", is known for its quaint pastel-colored homes and is the perfect place for a family summer vacation. Panama City is the Spring Break capitol and was named "The Best Beach in America" by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine. Enjoy great beachfront restaurants and exiting nightclubs at night while basking in the sun during the day. Families will love both its warm temperatures and warm personalities of the locals. Gorgeous beaches, natural beauty, world-class golf and tennis, southern hospitality, superb vacation rentals, and warm Florida sunshine make North Florida the perfect spot for any vacation.

Yes, here they are: * Unattractive word, misspell word. * Wrong grammatical sentence, too long sentences, sentences which is too complex and difficult to understand. * Too long paragraph * Inappropriate fonts or font size * Bad color or bad integration between background color and font color * Focus too many features about the services suppliers * Do not have a clear purpose, do not target * ........... If you had known these techniques, you could skip them, but if you've not known, then carefully apply them on your hospitality website to maximize your marketing purpose.

And here is the list:

1) Target your copywriting. Different group of visitors has different demand and status of emotion. Base on the target group database and write an appropriate copywriting to transfer your services which benefits to them most.

2) Almost of 80% of users skimmed and scanned when they surf for information on website. Most of the time, users try to find a specific piece of information or the answer to a specific question.

3) After find out enough information, they will give out the buying (booking) decision. Your copywriting must scientifically give enough information they need as well as creating a good feeling and impression about your services. That's the beginning when visitors feel satisfied and trusted enough to think of doing reservation or contacting you.

4) Having to read much is always an obstacle when surfing the Net. Prospects like scanning and then printing out their interested information. So, remember to include a Printer Friendly version of your website's main content will encourage them to print out your page and keep it for later reference. 5) You can use a Java code to junction this duty, but do not forget to include in the Printer Friendly version with your company Logo, Name and URL of your website. They may surf the internet for their vacation planning many times and get a good knowledge about your local tourist attraction and identity. They therefore can spot some outdated or wrong information on your website and you've been put under a negative impression.

Corporate Hospitality in the UK   by Chris Smith

What do we mean by Corporate Hospitality?

Corporate Hospitality can be described as any event where an organisation entertains clients, prospective clients or staff at the organisation's expense. This includes spectator sports, participatory events and activities, art or cultural events, and any other events.

The most popular events for entertaining guests are horseracing meetings, football matches, concerts and the major sporting tournaments such as the 6 Nations rugby, Royal Ascot, Test Cricket, The Open, Wimbledon and many more, too many to name here.

Corporate hospitality is usually sold in the form of a package which includes a good quality ticket or seat for the event along with drinks, a meal and sometimes a gift. This is a typical package but it does vary to cater for different events, facilities and budgets. Some packages, for example, would only include a drinks reception or buffet or, particularly at football events, simply the use of a corporate facility with drinks being paid for on the day.

Why use Corporate Hospitality?

The basic idea behind corporate hospitality is to strengthen relationships. Hospitality really targets the individual rather than the company as, for example, a purchasing director being invited by a sales director is of more benefit to the invitee than his/her company.

Hospitality could be seen as a form of bribery - a way to treat the individual in return for their custom but there is often more to it than this. Often these people would only ever speak on the phone or, at least, meet in a work environment. An invite to a corporate hospitality event offers the invitee the benefit of attending the event whilst offering the inviter, or host, the opportunity to get to know his customer.

A hospitality event has a much greater appeal than, say, inviting someone for a meal as it is often a highly prestigious event where tickets are not readily available. The event itself also serves as a focus for conversation - an easy ice breaker.

Justifying the cost

Hospitality packages can often seem highly expensive when compared to the broken down cost of a ticket, a meal and a few drinks but this is not a fair comparison. The hospitality package is an exclusive opportunity and should be likened to other forms of marketing rather than socialising.

Imagine that you have a contract worth several thousand pounds or dollars. Spending a few hundred on a hospitality package is as close as you can get to a guarantee of retaining this contract and, in the longer term, can be far more cost effective than cutting the customers' prices by a few percent.
