Factors To Consider When Choosing A Nursing School by Rita Henry
Nearly every major city - and a lot of not so major ones - has at least one accredited nursing school. The school that you choose to attend could be a major factor in more than just the education you receive. Graduating from a well-known nursing school can put the finishing touches on your resume and guarantee you a higher starting salary, for instance. Choosing a nursing school associated with the right hospitals for your practice work can also boost your credentials - or even help you choose a specialty that you'd never have considered. If you've decided on your career, but not your education, here are some basic considerations to help you make the decision of where to go to nursing school.
Location The most basic location consideration is how far away from home you want to be, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. A nursing school located in a busy metropolitan area, for example, can offer unexpected benefits in outside training, mentoring and hospitals/venues in which to complete your practicum. On the reverse side, a smaller, local school can offer a far more personalized approach. Take stock of what's important to you to help you zero in on schools in your desired area.
Area of Study Speaking of areas, that's another consideration. Do you have a yen to practice pediatric oncology? Are you interested in learning the basics of patient care in a research facility? Is general nursing exactly what you want to do? Check course listings and certifications offered by the schools that you're considering in order to determine which teach the beyond-basics things you want to learn.
Accreditation It is important that the school you choose be accredited by one of two national organizations for general nursing (The National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education). If you are applying to a specialized program, there are separate accrediting organizations such as the Nurse Anesthetist and Nurse Midwife, The Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, and The American College of Nurse-Midwives Division of Accreditation.
Most schools are approved by a state board, but that's not the same as accreditation. While it will enable you to sit for your NCLEX examination, it may prevent you from using the credits and going forward for continuing education, such as a BSN or master's degree. While it is possible to get a good education from a non-accredited school, you should thoroughly investigate it to be certain that their standards meet your needs.
Hands-On Experience You want as much experience as you can get during your training time, and that's why it's important to check out the school's clinical rotation program. This is where some schools that are affiliated with major teaching hospitals may have a major advantage, particularly if they specialize in one of your particular interests. When you're evaluating nursing schools, ask how much time you'll spend in clinical rotation, and what disciplines and specialties you may have a chance to observe and participate in.
Examination Success Perhaps one of the most important factors in considering a nursing school is the rate at which their students pass the NCLEX exam. Obviously, a high pass rate indicates that the school's students have been well prepared, but a low pass rate should be a huge red flag. Don't be shy about asking the school to provide you with their record of examination rates for the past few years.
Tuition Finally, the amount of money that it will cost you to attend the school will have to come into play. And because tuitions in nursing schools can vary so much, your goal should be to get the absolute best education for the least amount of money. Unfortunately, the only way you'll be able to determine this is by doing some good research into your potential schools.
Don't let money stop you from attending the school of your choice, though. Besides traditional routes of student aid, the nursing shortage over the past two decades has opened many opportunities for education funding. Ask about financial aid and work study programs, and be sure to check with local hospitals and organizations to find out if any offer scholarships for which you can apply.

The Lowdown on Obtaining An Online Nursing Master Degree by Sara Reed
Obtaining an online nursing master degree is important for several reasons. The most important reason is that many hospitals and other care facilities will not allow nurses to enter higher level administrative roles unless they have a master degree in nursing. This is because there are more management skills needed as well as advanced knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the care of patients. For a nurse to change careers and find a job in nursing administration, they will have to first earn a master degree in nursing to be considered for most positions.
A nurse has two options. They can either find a nursing program at a university and begin to attend classes. These classes will probably meet two or three times a week sometimes for up to three hours. When a person is working and raising a family, it may be difficult to attend classes while trying to keep everything else together. Another option is to obtain an online nursing master degree. Programs like these do not rely on classroom time. Students learn at home. They are expected to complete assignments and turn in tests and reports on time, but there is no time spent trying to find ways to get to classes after work or between family activities.
People who enroll in online programs want to obtain an online nursing master degree so that they can better themselves at work while still having time to spend with their families. While an online program will take time to complete, much less time will be needed traveling to and from classes. The workload does not change since the information must still be learned. But when a person can choose when they want to study and when they want to take their tests, it becomes easier to schedule the rest of their lives.

Thinking of an Accelerated Nursing Program to Further Your Career? by Luke T Axton
There is such a demand for people to enter the field of nursing that many new programs are being developed to certify nurses in record time. There are a number of options available and an accelerated nursing program is usually the most popular option among those who want to enter the field of medicine.
Some people may not be comfortable knowing that nurses can be trained in very little time. However, a good accelerated nursing program will be through and effective in helping the future nurse master the skills required for the job.
One thing to consider is the traits of a good nurse. The skills required to be an effective nurse are not completely taught in the classroom. Some people have the natural talent to be in this field while others will never master the job no matter how many hours they spend in the classroom.
An accelerated nursing program recognizes that the technical skills need to be targeted while the more subtle skills that the job requires are often inherit in the individual. Many patients have encountered the perfect nurse but few of us think about why that person was so good at his job.
There are some qualities that a good nurse has that can not be taught. Consider your best encounter with a nurse. She probably had the ability to put you at ease in just a few words. Or she could simply make you feel relaxed through her demeanor and approach.
Describing such qualities in your caregiver is often difficult. There is something about the person that helps you through the difficult situation but you are not sure what it is. Of course, an accelerated nursing program does not go into depth on developing such qualities. Neither does an extended, traditional program.
Now consider your worst encounter with a nurse. She was probably abrasive and indifferent. Maybe she was sarcastic. She may have made you feel as if you were a burden. She could have technically done everything right but you just feel awful after seeing her.
Bedside manner is briefly covered in an accelerated nursing program but it is equally addressed in the traditional school. The nurse who made you feel uneasy was probably unaware of her effect on you. She was just doing her job.
The fundamental difference between the good nurse and the bad one is their attitude toward the profession. The first nurse is caring for a person and she recognizes this. The second nurse is just doing her job.

Student nurses working in a clinical setting usually wear a uniform. The uniform is worn for hygiene as well as identification purposes.
The women in this photograph are wearing a uniform consisting of a dress, pinafore apron and nursing cap. There are however variations, and in some hospitals, student nurses also wear a nursing pin, or the pinafore apron may have been replaced by a cobbler style apron. A "scrub dress" is a simpler type of uniform, sometimes worn in operating rooms.
However, student nurses are more likely to wear practical and durable "scrubs", eschewing the old-fashioned cap and ruffles these days. It has been argued that the wearing of uniforms by nurses is unnecessary in terms of hygiene, for example, and may be more to do with a medically-dominated, hierarchical system in hospital settings, and the military roots of nursing. Also, there is no clear alternative to the traditional white dress and cap for male nurses. However, some favor a return to the old style of nursing uniforms so patients and other staff can readily identify who is a nurse and who is not, as physicians, various allied health professionals, nursing assistants and orderlies, and housekeeping staff often wear scrubs. |
