Over a three decade ago, one family came together to continue what their father had started. A son left his life in Los Angeles, investments were made and most importantly a lot of hard work and dedication was committed to a common goal – starting Best Buy Uniforms as the go to place for businesses to purchases uniforms.
In 1986 Best Buy Uniforms was born.
Milton Frischman had worked for his brother in a linen business for years. He was well versed in the industry and searching to expand for more when he was diagnosed with lung cancer. Just 18 months before he died, he invested his life saving’s to start Commercial Textiles Inc., – a business that sold uniforms wholesale to retailers in the restaurant and hotel industry.
After Milton passed, the survival of the business was in question. The family accountants and advisers did the numbers and urged Milton’s wife, Roslyn and her children to cut their losses and close the business, but the family didn’t feel the same.
One by one the siblings banded together. David Frischman left his marketing manager position at Twentieth Century Fox and joined his sister Cindy Frischman-Notkin to develop a business model and Lester Frischman to become the company’s treasurer.
Together they decided that going nationwide would open more prospects than just their previous concentration in western Pennsylvania.
Best Buy Uniforms invests heavily to build a sustainable business
It was time to take a chance and the family decided to make a $30,000 investment into a computer system that could help them easily manage inventory and a customer database. With a toll-free telephone number and some creative advertising, the business began to grow.
“The computer gives us information my father would have never dreamed of,” says Les. Adds David, who is company president: “My father used the old style of bookkeeping, writing in ledger books and adding by hand. The computer system makes payables and receivables very easy.” It also helped Commercial Textiles service orders faster than many similar companies, giving the company an important competitive edge, the brothers say.
More risks still had to be taken. More capital needed to be gamed so the Frishmans’ again took a gamble and took out a $40,000 loan. It wasn’t easy, but eventually, they got the loan they needed.
Starting Best Buy Uniforms – Growing via Hospitality and Restaurants
The family took on tedious tactics of thumbing through telephone directories from major U.S. cities and personally contacting managers at hotels and restaurants. Best Buy Uniforms sought out those upset with their customer service and offered a remedy to a company’s problem by providing attentive and helpful service.
Eventually business picked up and profits were made. By 1990, the company almost doubled their earnings and there was only promise for growth.
Growth has only continued throughout the years and the risk has paid off. The business was based on family and the business homes family will continue the business.
“My hope is that the future of the business will have the third generation of our family to take over Best buy Uniforms by my son Max and my brother’s children,” added Lester Frischman.
No one knows what the future holds, but one thing is for sure. Best Buy Uniforms is a business build on family and one that flourishes on excellent customer service.
